Suggested reading for February:
Atlas
Shrugged
With Ayn Rand’s novel Atlas Shrugged coming to
theaters on April 15, it seems like an appropriate time
to get reacquainted with a book that, according to a
1991 study conducted by the Library of Congress,
ranked as the second most influential book in America
(coming in after only the Bible!).
From the official Ayn Rand bookstore:
Tremendous in its scope, this novel
presents an astounding panorama of human life—from the
productive genius who becomes a worthless playboy to the great
steel industrialist who does not know that he is working for his
own destruction to the philosopher who becomes a pirate to the
composer who gives up his career on the night of his triumph to
the woman who runs a transcontinental railroad to the lowest
track worker in her Terminal tunnels.
Key quotes:
“There can be no compromise on basic principles. There can be no
compromise on moral issues. There can be no compromise on
matters of knowledge, of truth, of rational conviction.”
"The smallest minority on earth is the individual. Those who
deny individual rights cannot claim to be defenders of
minorities."
“The difference between a welfare state and a
totalitarian state is a matter of time.”
